Ted Chiang's "Hell Is the Absence of God"
1 September 2021 at 19:00 (MSK)
Venue: The adult library on the 3rd floor of ZIL Cultural Centre

Our next story is "Hell Is the Absence of God" by Ted Chiang. Chiang is an American science fiction writer who has won numerous awards for his short stories and we have discussed at least one of them, "Division by Zero", before. Whether or not our next story qualifies as science fiction is debatable, so we’ll let you decide.

For those of you who are interested, we are also including a “response” to Chiang by Ken Liu — we discussed Liu’s "Simulacrum" a few weeks ago.

Our main discussion will focus ONLY on Chiang’s story, not Liu’s. That said, we may briefly touch upon the latter if we have time.

Enjoy!

P.S. Please don't forget to bring masks with you.

"Midnight in Dostoevsky" by Donald Richard DeLillo
21 April 2021 at 19:00 (MSK)
Venue: The adult library on the 3rd floor of ZIL Cultural Centre.

Dear All,

This coming Wednesday, we are going to discuss "Midnight in Dostoevsky" by Donald Richard DeLillo. DeLillo is an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, screenwriter and essayist. His works have covered subjects as diverse as television, nuclear war, sports, the complexities of language, performance art, the Cold War, mathematics, the advent of the digital age, politics, economics, and global terrorism. Initially a well-regarded cult writer, he gained widespread recognition for his novel "White Noise", which won the National Book Award in 1985.

Without giving any spoilers, one of the reasons the story was chosen was because the blockhead posting this message simply failed to understand (or at the very least appreciate) it and he wanted someone to explain it to him.

We hope you enjoy the story and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
