My dear colleagues, my team and I have come up with yet another idea for our posts which you all might benefit from! 🤗 From time to time we will post some books on Teaching English that you can download and use to your own advantage. It could be compilations of activities and games, teaching guides, tips for teachers and more serious ones that can assist you in becoming a better version of yourself in teaching! 🙃

Our choice for today:

📖 1. ‘Learning Teaching’ by Jim Scrivener

The third fully revised edition of this book is not called the essential guide to English language teaching for nothing. This truly is a guide which can help a new teacher when they are pressed for time and information. ‘Learning Teaching’ is quoted on conferences and webinars all the time. In this book, you will find 16 chapters on a variety of topics: classroom management, lesson planning, teaching productive and receptive skills, using technology and so on. There will be practical tasks too — this time for teachers rather than students.

📖 2. ‘The Practice of English Language Teaching’ by Jeremy Harmer

If you haven’t found the answers to your questions in ‘Learning Teaching’, you will find them here. And vice versa, to be honest. Apart from highly practical chapters on topics like giving feedback, grouping students or testing and evaluation, there will be ones which will give you insight into linguistics, methods and approaches, and ways of describing both teachers and learners. ‘The Practice of English Language Teaching’ might be a bit more challenging reading if you are just starting your teaching career, but it is worth a try.

📖 3. ‘100 Teaching Tips’ by Penny Ur

The book provides a set of hands-on tips on 18 different aspects of teaching, such as teacher talk, using a coursebook, giving and checking homework, discipline, games, testing and assessment etc. Ms Ur says that she has written it as a collection of experience-based insights which might prevent other teachers from ‘re-inventing the wheel’. This book may well surprise you irrespective of your teaching experience.

Material for teaching PASSIVE VOICE in store for you today! 🥳 5 PPTS and 4 great speaking activities.

The one that I like the most is called "What is in common?". There are two things (movies, buildings, names, places, books etc) that your students need to find an association with. For example, you see: Bohemian Rhapsody and We will rock you, so you have to say "Both Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock you were sung by Queen."

It’s less than one month before the school year starts! 🙈 and we have books every primary school teacher should read 😃

1. Teaching Young Learners to Think by Herbert Puchta, Marion Williams
(This book includes 80 ELT Activities for Young Learners (6-12 y.o.). There are photocopiable worksheets and teacher’s notes. These fun activities are aimed at developing students’ both language and thinking skills.)

2. Grammar for Young Learners by Professor Gordon Lewis, Hans Mol
(This book helps teachers present and practise grammar in a fun way. It puts meaning first, and grammar becomes an essential part of making this meaning explicit.)

3. Storytelling with Children by Wright (This book gives a lot of ideas on how to use stories to teach English. There are ready-made stories and activities that can be used with any story.)

4. English for Primary Teachers by Slattery Mary, Willis Jane (This book includes activities, techniques and tips on teaching primary students.)

My first impression of the UK and Londoners:

🇬🇧 1. Public transportation works beyond reproach. Buses are literally everywhere, not too much traffic for such a huge city, metro stations are on every corner, DLR (Docklands Light Railway) is super convenient.

🇬🇧 2. Everything is so pricey that I prefer not to trouble myself thinking about how much I spend daily. Just for some reference, a couple of metro rides cost me 10 bucks a day. A lunch meal in an averagely priced cafe is 15$. Thank God I don’t have to pay for accommodation.

🇬🇧 3. Londoners are so sweet and courteous that it’s nearly impossible to feel down for too long here. Every person is genuinely friendly, helpful and welcoming. There are no racial, gender or any other boundaries between people here. Everybody feels free to express themselves and it's so liberating.

🇬🇧 4. There’s a whole plethora of accents, dialects and languages that you hear everywhere you go. It’s a true melting pot of cultures and nationalities.

🇬🇧 5. All the pics of London I’ve seen before didn’t do it any justice. London’s city center is immaculately tidy and cozy, teeming with quaint cottages, intricately designed palaces and cobbled alleys that immediately transport you to Middle ages.

🇬🇧 6. All the food (drinks, flowers, craft, you name it) labels proudly state that it’s been made/grown/created in Great Britain. Such astonishing patriotism! 😅

🇬🇧 7. The weather is actually not as depressing as I always imagined it to be. The temperature is quite mild and the clear sky is visible every other day. It hasn’t rained at all in 10 days. A proper European style winter with lush grass, occasional sunny days and 😜 Brits wearing shorts while jogging.

Any recommendations? 🤗
